Why Yoga Can Be For You

July 20, 2011 § Leave a Comment

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit term meaning “union” or “yoke”. Therefore, the practice of yoga seeks to create unity between the mind, body, and spirit of a person. Yoga is an ancient tradition that subscribes to no religion. It began in India more than 5000 years ago and was used as a tool to help yogis reach nirvana. Today, the ultimate goal of yoga is still to reach nirvana; however, today in this modern age of society, its positive effects can be seen and felt every day through deeper relationships, more focused career paths, a healthier physical body, and a simpler, more honest way of communicating with ourselves and others. Whether you want to lose weight and get fit, reduce stress and cope with life better, or explore your own spiritual path, yoga offers a way to cultivate personal awareness with more than physical relaxation. It can be a pathway to a greater understanding of the question “who am I?”

Best Coastal Retreats To Visit

July 14, 2011 § 1 Comment

Coastal Living Magazine recently did a feature on what they named as the 23 best coastal yoga retreats to be sure to visit. They made an interesting point about the nature of yoga retreats with regard to perception and evolution over recent years. Until recently for many, the thought of a yoga retreat brought up  images of hippie-lodgings with sparse dormitories, flavorless vegan food, and long hours of silence interspersed with chanting. But now, thanks to the spa vacation trend and the surging popularity of the practice of yoga, those who want to stretch out and rejuvenate while enjoying a relaxing beach trip can have it all! Here are a few of the enticing Mexican spas featured by Coastal Living

The Tides at Zihuatanejo, Mexico
Why You’ll Love It: The small Mexican fishing village setting comes with a beautiful stretch of beach. Add instructor Tom Morley, a Los Angeles yoga icon with celebrity clients and a loyal following, and you’ve achieved nirvana.
Where You’ll Salute the Sun: under an oceanfront palapa, the Pacific lapping just feet in front of you, with views of lush mountains
Post-Yoga Diversions: A red algae body wrap at the spa. A yacht cruise along the coastline. A beachside tequila tasting before an authentic Pacific-Mexican dinner.
